Privacy policy
Last updated:
FullySky is built to collect as little as possible. This policy explains, in plain language, what we keep, why we keep it and when it is deleted.
The short version
- Readers get no cookies, and there are no analytics, ads or tracking pixels.
- A comment needs only a name and the comment itself.
- Contact messages are used to answer you and deleted after 90 days.
- Web server access logs are deleted after about two weeks.
- We do not sell personal data or share it with advertisers.
When you read
Reading FullySky needs no account. We set no cookies for readers and run no analytics or third-party scripts.
As on nearly every website, our web server keeps standard access logs: the IP address of the request, the page requested, the browser’s user agent and the time. We use these logs only for security and to keep the service running. They are rotated and deleted after about two weeks.
To limit spam, the site briefly checks your IP address when you send a comment or a contact message. This rate limiting happens in memory only; the address is not stored in the site’s database.
When you comment
The comment form asks for two things: a name and your comment. We do not ask for an email address, and you may use any name.
Comments are held for review. Once approved, a comment is public on the piece it belongs to, together with the name you gave and the date. Comments that are never approved are deleted automatically after 30 days.
When you contact us
The contact form collects your name, your email address, the topic you choose and your message. We use them only to read and handle your request and to reply. Contact messages are deleted automatically after 90 days.
Writers
Writers join by invitation. A writer’s profile (name, handle, portrait, short bio and optional website link) and their published pieces are public by design. Writers keep ownership of their work and can ask us to remove pieces, or their whole blog, at any time.
Cookies
FullySky uses a single cookie: a session cookie for the site’s administrators, set when they sign in so the site remembers them. Readers and commenters receive no cookies at all.
Other services
A few files are delivered by other providers. When your browser requests them, that provider receives your IP address and browser information, as with any web request:
- Google Fonts (fonts.googleapis.com and fonts.gstatic.com) delivers the typefaces used on every page.
- Unsplash (images.unsplash.com) delivers the photographs on the home page.
Those requests are covered by the providers’ own privacy policies. No other outside service receives information about your visit. The site is served over HTTPS with certificates from Let’s Encrypt, so what you send is encrypted in transit.
What we never do
- Build profiles of readers or follow them across pages or other sites.
- Show advertising or sell anyone’s attention.
- Add commenters to mailing lists. We never ask commenters for an email address in the first place.
How long things are kept
| Data | Kept for |
|---|---|
| Web server access logs | About two weeks |
| IP addresses for rate limiting | In memory only, never stored |
| Comments awaiting review | 30 days, unless approved |
| Contact messages | 90 days |
| Published pieces and approved comments | Until they are removed |
Your requests
You can ask what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it, such as a comment you posted or a message you sent. Use the contact page and choose Privacy request. Give us enough detail to find the item, for example the piece and the name you used. We may ask a question to make sure the request really comes from you.
Changes
If the way we handle data changes, we will update this policy and the “last updated” date above. We will not start collecting more without saying so here first.
